Our Story

It all started with a conversation. Two friends realizing they had the same dream of building a community bookstore.

How it Started

From a shared dream to Katy's coziest bookshop.

Our story began over a decade ago when co-founders Stephanie and Julie met through church, building a friendship steeped in mutual interests. It was about two years ago when a casual ‘when I open my bookstore…’ from Stephanie unexpectedly revealed Julie’s own lifelong, secret desire to do the same. This serendipitous moment ignited a shared vision.

A quick text led to a pivotal dinner, where the feasibility of this dream was discussed. Approaching their families with the idea, Stephanie and Julie were met with immediate and enthusiastic support, confirming that Mockingbird Books was destined to materialize. Named by one of Julie’s sons, our bookshop took shape over two dedicated years, leading to its grand opening in July 2025.

Mockingbird Books has been thoughtfully created as a welcoming community space, designed for everyone who cherishes books and the act of reading. It’s a place to comfortably spend time with friends, or to forge new connections over a shared passion for all things literary. Here, you’ll discover our carefully curated collection, alongside coffee, unique gifts, and a selection of wine – all intended to invite you to truly sit, stay, and savor the moment in your new favorite haven.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions.

Mockingbird Books was born from a shared, lifelong dream between co-founders Stephanie and Julie. It was a serendipitous discovery that they both harbored a desire to create a welcoming community space centered around books, coffee, and wine for the Katy area.

Our name, Mockingbird Books, was lovingly suggested by one of co-owner Julie's sons. The mockingbird is the state bird of Texas, and we love the classic To Kill a Mockingbird. It resonates with the idea of storytelling, embodies comfort, and carries a timeless literary feel that we cherish as a symbol of our evolving space.

Our mission is to foster a vibrant community hub where everyone feels invited to 'sit, stay, and savor.' We aim to be a cozy sanctuary for book lovers, a place for discovery, connection, and relaxation, truly blending the joy of reading with the comforts of home.

We believe in being an active part of Katy. Beyond offering a beloved gathering space, we plan to host engaging community events, author signings, and collaborate with local initiatives to enrich the cultural fabric of our neighborhood.

Our unique combination sets us apart: a carefully curated selection of books, a coffee and wine bar designed for lingering, and a warm, inviting atmosphere that encourages patrons to truly make themselves at home. It's a place to find your next great read and your next great moment of comfort.

Absolutely! Julie and Stephanie are the heart and soul of Mockingbird Books. They are deeply passionate about this dream and will be actively involved in curating our collection, hosting events, and ensuring every visitor feels welcome.
